New Head of Animal Welfare – Appointed
It is my great pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Mairi Stewart to the role of Head of Animal Welfare for Greyhound Racing New Zealand. Mairi is an Animal Welfare expert, with a strong animal welfare science background. She is currently the Research and Development Director for InterAg leading research projects focused on developing innovate technologies to improve animal health and welfare, specifically for the Dairy industry.
Mairi is a prolific publisher and presenter of research material in international scientific journals and conferences. Her PHD thesis (which she completed whilst working at AgResearch as a Scientist/Senior Scientist in Animal Welfare) was focused on measuring animal stress within the dairy industry and is regarded as a landmark piece of work and a world first. Her research has subsequently been patented and used amongst other things to support the advancement of public policy through MPI on recommendations for codes of animal welfare.
Mairi has an understanding of the racing industry through work she has done in the thoroughbred space preparing yearlings for sale and pre-race training. Her Masters of Science thesis was on the welfare of Race Horses during Air Transport. Combined with her extensive science background, Mairi has strong and existing relationships with our key regulatory and animal welfare partners namely, MPI, National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee (NAWAC), RNZ SPCA and Massey University. She will bring real credibility and standing to those relationships, which is only good for GRNZ.
Mairi has a strong passion and commitment for working directly with stakeholders and her natural, down to earth style will see her relate strongly to our wide stakeholder base. I am truly excited about having a person of Mairi’s calibre, skill set and personality join the team and I know she will make a significant, positive contribution for GRNZ and the wider sport of greyhound racing, building on the solid animal welfare foundations already in place.
Mairi will be moving from Hamilton to join the GRNZ team here in Petone and we are working on locking in her start date over the next week or so.
Please join me in welcoming Mairi on board.
